Rawhide Raw Hide Seats
How do you – I fix or repair chairs with these crisscross rawhide leather strip seats?
Rawhide is 3/8″ wide and very thick. It is cut from tough steer hide especially saved for chair seats. We try to use a continuous strand for each chair aprox (30′) but sometimes a splice is necessary. We must soak the rawhide in 110 degree warm water for 6-8 hours so it will stretch sufficiently to weave a tight mule eared chair seat. This is the exact same material that your dog’s rawhide chew toy bones are made from. After all the soaking, the material is just about right for stretching over a chair frame. It’s the same consistency as when Rover has been chewing on the bone all evening. A very slimy material and very fun material to work with!
Mule Ear Rawhide Seat Chair
Leather Seats
Another type of chair we often see is one that has a round or sometimes square piece of leather tacked to the seat with decorative brass nails instead of having caning in it. Many times though, these chairs had cane in them. Now for one reason or another, they have these leather seats.
